Claim: Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's major field of study.
Reason: Acquiring knowleadge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated.
In my view, to be truly educated is to have knowledge beyond the restricted cirriculum and to explore a variety of other fields which would bring profound insights in the subject. The author claims that universities must make it mandatory for students to take up variety of courses other than the student's major field of study. I agree with his reasoning that knowledge aquired thorugh various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated.
Let us take for example, a student who is pursuing his academic goal of becoming a successful lawyer. For such a student, there will be mandatory law couses with tomes of knowledge on the finer aspects of laws. But, consider if this student also takes up a course on criminal psychology which is not an essential part of his cirriculum. This psychology course will help him to broaden his knowledge. It will make him profoundly understand the reasons as to why the society needs lawyers in the first place- because of a misplaced sense of justice in the psychology of criminals. An understanding of his client or opponents psychology would help him develop his cases better and he would become a truly educated lawyer.
A second instance would be a student of MBA program. Apart from his cirriculum if this student's university makes it mandatory for him to take up a variety of other courses, it would benefit him in more ways than one. For example, this student will take up culture classes. This would help him to understand the cultures of the global clients he would meet in the span of his career. It would truly educate him how to negotiate deals with people with various cultural background. Moreover, if this student takes up a communication and body language class as a part of his extra courses, it would develop him to be a confident bussinessman. Such an all rounder bussiness man can be called truly educated.
A third instance would be a student whose major field of study is architecture. This student, when coerced by the university to take up variety of other courses, could take up art and aesthetics classes. These classes would help him develop an eye for aesthetics along with functionality in his buildings. This addition of art and beauty to his knowledge of architecture would indeed create wonders. It would be the best way for this future architect to be well educated in the subtle factors that lead to creating functional and aesthetically beautiful building in the future.
In conclusion, I beleive that universities must make it mandatory for every student to take up a variety of courses apart from their mundane cirriculum. Through the evidences of students given above from various fields, it is clear that such an initiative would truly benefit them. It would expose them to different areas and provide profound insights to their proffession, hence making them truly educated.
