The reading discusses the main possible theories concerning the Steller cow fish’s extinction. It represents three extinction ideas that seem probable in its view. However, the professor in the lecture totally disagrees with these hypotheses and gives three reasons of support to refute each of the proposed pathways respectively.
First, the article believes that the extinction could have been caused by native Siberians overhunting attitude which lead to a serious decline in cow fishes population subsequently. But, the professor opposes this belief and thinks that this could not be possible since these animals were very gigantic and 9 meter long. So, the native folks can not hunt a lot of them for feeding purposes.
Second, the passage relates the extinction of cow fishes to the disturbances made in their habitat and ecosystem which initiated a radical reduction in their population around the island they lived. In contrast, he insists that this notion is problematic fundamentally, since it did not consider that if these animals might extinct from this action, other spices like whales and Kelps which cow fishes feed on should have been eliminated too. In contrary, their population remained intact when they became extinct. Thus, this reason logically can not be true about their disappearance.
Third, the reading suggests that may be European fur traders caused this extinction. On the other hand, professor indicates that these traders arrived to the island when these animals population already dramatically were decreased. So, generally there must be another explanation for their extinction, because sea cow fish animals were extinct long before their arrival to the island.
