The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about the warfare tools under the name of "burning mirror" that is used in the greek army. The author of the reading states that it was a myth and provides three episodes of evidence for this. The lecturer, on the other hand, challenges the claims made by the author. she is of the opinion that the reasons provided by the author not convincing, and bring up a number of contradictory point in it's rejection.
To begin with, The author argues that the greek people were not advance enough to make such a complex weapon. The article mentions that this mirror might be wide and precise to deflect sun rays to the enemy's ships. this specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. she claims that this tool could make by small pieces. Additionally, she states that they made small copper sheets and joint them precisely to made wide and parabolic mirror.
Secondly, the writer suggests that by conducted experience, this mirror needed much time, about 10 minutes, to ignite the vessels into the fire. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by asserting that this experiment applied on wood material. she elaborates on this by bringing up the point that all ships made by various materials, not only wood, so other material like peach that utilize for waterproofing purpose was susceptible to fire and fired in a second. so, after pechs are fire, the fire could transmit to other wooden section of ships.
Finally, the author posits that greek people could use the flaming arrow to make fire in the enemy's ships. Moreover, in the article, it is stated that flaming arrow and that mirror need same distance for making fire, so, the usage of this mirror was squandering of time. In contrast, the lecturer's position is that flaming arrow is old warfare tools, and the enemy could recognize that immediately. she forth the notion that burning mirror is an efficient weapon because the enemies observe the mirror and could not see its rays, so magically this mirror could make fire without any observation.
- The main idea of both the reading and the lecture is about Robert Peary’s claim. The reading states that he reached the North Pole and presents three reasons. However, the professor asserts that this evidence is actually very uncertain. She refutes each 70
