The passage and the lecture both explains about the altruism. The passage states that this is a kind of behavior in which animal and human beings help others without gaining something. In contrast, the lecture says that it's not true that the animal and human are not gaining anything in return.
First point passage made about the human being that some of the people donate the organ such as a kidney to their relative. Infact there are a few people who give their organ to the person whom they don't know at all. In this act, they don't get any benefit or rewards in back. However, the lecturer says about the people that it is not that they are not getting anything they are getting appreciation and nice beautiful words from other people. It makes them feel self-worth. Only getting materialistic rewards is not the things, for some people getting this appreciation is more valuable.
Furthermore, the passage gives the example of an animal meerkat for having altruistic behavior and says that one of group member acts as a standing guard to see the predators while others are hunting for food. The standing guard gets no food and also make their life in danger to save the group. But the lecture casts doubt in it by saying that a study has been shown that the standing guard eats first and then they perform the act of standing. Beside this lecturer also adds the point that the standing guard is the one who sees first to see the predators so he runs first. Thus he is safer than another group member. when the standing guard makes noise to warn another group member that predators are here it becomes more dangerous for the group member because now predators understand it and he can go and eat the Meerkat group. So basically the standing guard does not save their lives but putting them in danger.
