In this set of materials, the reading passage states that a huge marine mammal known as Settler's sea cow lived in the waters around Bering Island became extinct, and the reading provides several theories about the main cause of extinction. On the other hand, the listening section brings into question the reading points by providing different reasons (and examples).
First and foremost, the reading indicates that native people used sea cows as food; hence, they started to overhunting this animal and diminished the number of sea cows; in contrast, the lecture opposes this view by mentioning that sea cows were very huge animals, they have 9 meters long and 10 tons weight. So, a couple of them were enough for Siberian people, because the population of native people was not large, and they did not need overhunting this animal. Indeed, this is not the true reason.
Furthermore, the reading argues that changing in ecosystems would reduce the main source of food for sea cows; thus, they faced diminished food source and they became extinction; conversely, what the professor believes is different. He points out that changing in ecosystems near Bering Island sometime before 1768 must the effect on other animals such as whale. But, we do not have reports about whales that faced diminish the food, and they not decline. So, it is not a possible reason.
Finally, according to the reading, European fur traders started hunting and killing sea cows and they used fur of sea cows. However, the lecturer believes that before European people wanted to hunt sea cows, the population of sea cows were decreased. Some other reasons would cause to decreasing cow's population before the European arrived. Hence, this reason also not correct.
