Based on the given materials, the article as well as the lecturer discusses Hail, some freezed pieces that fall from clouds and encountering it in order to reduce farm damages. The author propose that a procedure called "cloud seeding" can have promising effect in this regard. That being said, the lecturer provide several ideas to repudiate this claim.
Initially, it is alleged in the reading that adding iodide, a silver chemical, to clouds can prevent shaping hails and instead they precipitate as snow since they are made of water vapor. However, the listening asserts that it might be effective only under laboratory condition but in real life it can prohibit any kind of precipitation. So cloud seeding can result in drought and consequently plants might damage from lack of water. Maybe it can solve one problem but at the same time causes bigger predicaments too.
Second, the writer proclaims that according to an experiment conducted in urban areas of Asia, since the people of that area were successful it can work in America too. Yet again, the speaker underscores that the experiment was done in urban are were the air is polluted and pollution provides a favorable condition for cloud seeding but in farm land where the air is cleaner it might not work. as a result working in an urban area does not necessarily meant it can work in farm land too.
The last point of contention between the listening and reading passages is a study conducted on central farm lands of America. The author states that in this study the crops where less damaged by implementing cloud seeding and this accounts for its effectiveness. On the other hand, the lecturer mentions that in that area not only the study vicinity experienced an improvement but also quarters near this are shows the same result. So she concludes that the improvement was not a result of the cloud seeding and was only a natural variation so the study is not strong enough to support the procedure.
