The reading passage and the listening passage here discuss about the attribution of a painting of a woman John Whistler. The article claims that the painting is painted by Whistler and gives corresponding reasons. However, the professor in the audio challenges this claim by providing contradictory arguments each of the reasons.
To begin with, the author mentions that the painting was displayed in an art exhibition held by one of the Whistler’s closest friends after Whistler’s death. The article goes on to mention that because of this, it makes sense to attribute the the painting to Whistler. The professor opposes this claim by bringing up that point that the exhibition included not only Whistler’s paintings but of many others which were owned by the person holding the exhibition. For this reason, we cant just attribute the painting to Whistler just because it was included in the exhibition.
Secondly, the article mentions that the woman in the painting is same as the woman in the Whistler’s painting “Symphony in the White” and also the monochromatic style in it resembles with Whistler’s works. Further, the writer claims this should mean the painting is indeed painted by Whistler. The professor rebuts this reasoning. He underscores the point that the woman used in the paintings is a famous artistic model of that time was used in many paintings, also the monochromatic style is also a popular style of the time. He goes to say, consequently, these do not stand as an evidence for the painting being one of Whistler’s works.
Finally, the author notes that a small butterfly structure was used by Whistler in his paintings as a signature and this was present in this painting too. Further, the article claims that this should mean it was indeed Whistler’s work. The professor undermines this argument by highlighting the fact that the butterfly in this painting is totally of different shape and colour and is in a different place than that were present in Whistler’s paintings. Furthermore, he brings up the point that, research has revealed that this butterfly was added much later after the original painting was made and is perhaps a forgery that was made to make it look like a work of Whistler.
