The reading article and the audio deal about the consequences of providing a four day week option to employees at salary of 80 percent of their current amount. The author claims that it will be beneficial to employees, the companies and even to the economy as a whole by discussing corresponding reasons. However, the professor argues that it will not be advantageous to anyone by providing counter arguments to each of the reasons.
Firstly, the author mentions that it will be beneficial for the companies since such employees who chose to have four day work week can be paid less and they can hire new employees to make up for this, consequently saving money. The professor refutes this by mentioning that it would not be cost effective for the companies since it would only cost them more for training the new employees, providing for more computers and office space and other benefits. Moreover, the health benefits of the four day work week employees would remain the same too thereby effectively increasing the expense of the company.
Secondly, the author suggests that this would decrease the unemployment since it would open up new job openings. The professor rebuts this by highlighting that the companies wont prefer to hire new employees due to reasons of increased costs but rather will choose to increase the expectations on the current employees to do the five day equivalent work in four days itself by asking to work overtime. As a result, there would be no new job openings possible.
Finally, the writer states that this would have a positive effect on the personal life of such employee by providing them more leisure time. Again, the professor undermines this by noting that this four day work custom would instead have a detrimental effect on such employees by decreasing job security, growth opportunities because companies would prefer usual five day work employees for managerial roles hoping they can effectively perform their duties. As a result, this would introduce risks and possibly decrease the quality of life of such employees.
