TPO 49 - Integrated writing

The main idea of both the passage and the talk is whether humpback whales use stars for their long distances migration or not. In the text, the author claims that there are some evidence in this regard. The lecturer challenges all the mentioned answers and believes none of this arguments is convincing.

Firstly, the author states that humpback whales' brain are capable to use stars for navigation since these animals seem to be high intelligent. Conversely, the lecturer says that other animals such as duck utilize stars for navigation but none of these animals is high intelligent. Thus, it can be easily concluded that the brain complexity could not guarantee using stars for navigation.

Moreover, the author asserts that some animals such as humpback rely on external signs such as starts to migrate in straight lines. On the contrary, the speaker believes that although numerous animals like humpback whale implement external objects for navigation, this animal use magnetic field for find its way because this animal has a specific organ on its brain that provide this opportunity for it.

Eventually, the reading passage holds the opinion that humpback whale look at stars some times by having a special behavior which is known as spy-hopping. The lecturer, however, points out that although the spy-hopping is rare among animals, they use this behavior for other purposes such as for hunting. For example, shark do this behavior to catch its prey. Moreover, humpback whale do this behavior in day time rather than night. Therefore, the mentioned behavior cannot be compelling evidence for using a star for navigation.
