The lecture and the reading passage discuss humpback whales long distance migration for feeding and mating. Although the passage claims that humpback whales may be navigating by stars during their migrations, the speaker refutes this idea through a number of reasons which I will describe in this report.
First and foremost, the passage points out that humpback whales' brains have a high degree of complexity, so they are intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by. The lecturer, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that there is not any real connection between intelligence and use of stars for navigation. He adds that some birds such as ducks use stars for navigating during their migrations. On the other hand, we know that ducks have an average cognitive ability, and they are born with the star-based navigation ability. Therefore, there is not any clear relationship between intelligence and navigation by stars.
Furthermore, unlike the reading passage which states that migrating in straight lines could be good evidence of using stars for navigation, the professor argues that the external force that humpback whales use for migrating in straight lines could be the Earth magnetic field because they have biomagnified in their brains, which make them able to sense the magnetic field of the Earth, and they could use it instead of stars for traveling in straight lines.
Finally, although the passage says that humpback whales may do spy-hopping in order to watch the stars and navigate by them, the speaker disagrees by mentioning that other animals which do not migrate like sharks do spy-hopping too, and they do it just for hunting. In addition, humpback whales do spy-hopping during the day that there are not any stars in the sky. Thus, spy-hopping is not a good reason for using stars to navigate.
