TOEFL integrated writing: Endotherms
The author states that though dinosaurs are different from reptiles in many ways, there are few arguments that they are rather endotherms and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that many scientists do not quite agree with those arguments and refutes each of the reasons of the author.
Firstly, the reading claims that the dinosaur fossils which were excavated in the polar regions suggest that they lived there. Also, it says that only endotherms are capable of maintaining their body temperatures above the surrounding environment. The professor refutes this point by saying that the fossils found were warm which implied that they lived in polar regions when it was warm. Moreover, she said that it can also be the case that the dinosaurs migrated during the cold days or even hibernated.
Secondly, the author posits that there's a link between the position and movement of the legs and endotherms. It is said that all of the endotherms have legs placed underneath their body which was a characteristic seen in the dinosaurs. However, the professor explains that there can be another reason for having such a leg position, for example, it helps to support the weight of the dinosaurs. According to the professor, due to such physiology dinosaurs can grow bigger in size and it has nothing to do with their physical activity like running.
Thirdly, the reading states that dinosaur's bone structures consisted of Haversian canals, which was common in all endotherms, to allow them to grow rapidly. The professor opposes this point by saying that though they did have Haversian canals they also had growth rings that occurred due to the thickening of the bone during the periods when they are growing slowly. We also learn that there was a pattern of rapid growth and slow or no growth, at times of cold periods, observed in dinosaurs. She brings out the fact that this is not something we see in the case of endotherms rather they can grow rapidly even when the environment is cooler.
