fossils of ancient organisms
Both the reading and the lecture discuss whether or not selling and buying fossils by private collectors is advantageous. While the reading challenges that fossils private collection is unfortunate not only for science but also for the general public, The lecture, on the other hand, refutes the point made by the author and states that fossil private collection has many advantages that could outweigh its disadvantages.
First and foremost, fossils' private collections will make it difficult for common and the public to see fossils and make them less accessible to be seen. Therefore, people will have no more interest to see or study fossils. On the other hand, the professor argues this point by claiming that fossil collectors make it possible for the general public to get exposed to fossils and study them. According to the professor, schools and museums will purchase fossils routinely from private collectors and demonstrate them in public.
Moreover, the reading claims that it is crucial that scientists are likely to miss out on the opportunity to know important outbreaks and discoveries about fossils because the fossils buyers would have spent millions of dollars to own the rarest and most important fossils. However, the professor casts doubts on this point by saying it is not realistic because the only scientist is able to examine and testify fossils. Even though, if fossils are owned by private buyers it should have been tested by archeologists. For this reason, it is unlikely that scientists will miss the opportunity to discover a new for important findings in fossils discoveries.
Finally, the lecture refutes the last point made in the reading by stating that if not through commercial collectors who are mostly able to unearth important fossils many fossils will go undiscovered. For the reason that scientists and universities missing the potential and the equipment needed to carry such fossils. Nevertheless, the author of the reading only states that commercial fossils collectors do not have adequate training to handle unearthed fossils. The author explains that it is plausible that important documentation and careful attention to fieldwork and surroundings will be missed because of inexperienced collectors.
