The reading passage and lecture talks about the film, Gone with the Wind, of Margaret Mitchell’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel. The reading passage states that the movie's reputation has fallen in recent years because of the allegations of racism portrayed in the movie. However, the lecturer disagrees and gives counter reasons for the critics.
On the first hand, the lecturer feels that it is overstated about the slavery. The reading passage states that the main character Scarlett's maid, Mammy presented in movie without a first name and gets slap on face from Scarlett. And the character was dim-witted and depicts the negative stereotypes. However, the lecturer posits that Mammy character is a rich, complex character and fierceful when comes protecting her loved ones. In addition, she portrays the character as a bold one, speaks what she thinks.
Second, the reading passage states about the civil right activist Malcolm X's critic about Butterfly McQueen’s performance and he was so embarrassed to see that. On the other hand, the lecturer disagrees with that comment by explaining about the highlights of Butterfly McQueen’s character. She goes on that the character added rebellism and was unafraid to disobey their owners in order to speak the character's mind. In addition, she says that the character uses high pitch in volume at scenes to emphasize its value.
Third, the reading passage also states that the main character Scarlett O’Hara's, a slave owner, family goes to the Civil war to keep up own rights and to degrade African Americans. But, the lecturer explains about the opportunities african americans got after the movie in industry, which paved path for future generations.
