TPO44: the silver coin which is founded in US is genuine evidence or the fake one?
The reading and the lecture are both about European silver coin which is dating to eleventh century and was found in archaeological sites in the state of Maine in the United States. The author of the reading asserts three reasons which prove that the coins were fake. However, the lecturer challenges the reading reasons and claim that the coins can be genuine.
First of all, the author argues that there is a long distance between Norse settlement and archeological site in which coins were found. The article mentions that Norse settlement was in eastern Canada while the coin sites are located in North America and there is a great distance between them. On the contrary, the lecturer believes that the Norse were interested in obtaining objects during their travels. Additionally, he says that they travel from faraway places but gathering different objects which have historical explanations behind them. The Norse carry all these objects with them during their movement. So, it is possible for them to collect coins from somewhere different to their settlement and bring them to North America.
Secondly, the writer suggests that they couldn't find any other coins in the Canadian site which is the Norse settlement. In the article, it is said that Norse didn't have any coins to bring them to North America. Conversely, the speaker is of the opinion that the Norse didn't have a permanent settlement in North America. He elaborates on this by bringing up the point that the Norse travel to Europe several times and during these travels they picked all coins and took back to Europe. So, the Norse can bring all coins to North America and took them back to Europe.
Finally, the author posits that the coins didn't worth as much as today. Moreover, it is stated in the article that The North Americans were not familiar with the value of silver coins and they were not interested in coins. In contrast, the professor underlines the fact that silver coins were appealing and beautiful enough to attract their attention. He notes that North Americans could use silver as a necklace or jewelry. Also, the Norse could use them for trade with North Americans.
