The reasons for Little Ice Age is the main topic of the debate between the passage and the lectur. The passage gives three reasons for the Little Ice Age, while, the lecturer disagrees and refute them.
The first reason that the passage gives for the ice age relates to the Gulf Stream. It is mentioned that melting glaciers, which introduced large amount of cold water into the ocean, results in disruption of ocean currents and earth cooling. The lecturer, on the other hand, disagrees and states that current researchs indicate that, this can only effect Europe and North America and not the Southern parts of the earth.
The second reason concerns the volcanic effect. The passage believes that the dust from volcanic eruption had blocked the sunlight to reach the earth and caused the earth to cool, however, the lecturer disagrees and believes that if there were enough dust to block the sunlight, there should have been reports from people who had vision problem and there were not.
Finally, the passage holds the decrease in human population as the result for the cooling of earth and believes that it helped the forest to grow and cool down the earth's tempreture. The lecturer disagrees and mentions that the decrease in human population hand not last long enough to be one of the major reasons for The Little Ice Age.
