Offering employees options
The speaker believes that offering employees to be able to have four day workweeks will not affect the items mentioned in the reading the way they were explained in the reading.
He expresses that offering the option to work for four days would not help companies save money since it would force them to spend more on training new employees and medical insurance. He denotes that the training and medical costs are the same regardless of how many days per week the employee will be working. He also states that hiring more employees will result in the need for more office space and computers.
Another point he makes is that this might not result in more jobs. The companies might ask their current employees to work overtime to cover the extra workload. He believes it is possible that the companies might even go further and raise expectations, making it seem so that four day employees need to do the same amount of work as full time employees. This way, no jobs will be added while making work harder for four day employees.
Another issue the speaker is concerned with is the fact that employees who choose to work four days a week might have a less stable job. He believes that this would hurt their career and make them prone to being the first people to lose their jobs at the time of crisis. He also states that these employees would probably be passed over for promotion since the companies would want full time employees as managers so that they can supervise other employees during the course of the week.
