The writing and the lecturer are both about employment. The writer talks about a mandatory policy requiring workers to work a four-day week and its benefit to the economy, however, the Professor disagrees with the claim made by the author.
First of all. the writer in the passage states that the shortened work week would increase the company profits because employees would feel more rested. The lecturer challenges this, he believes that a four-day week will not decrease the company profit, rather it will cost the company more money by employing new staff who will need training, health benefits, new computers and even office space.
Secondly, the author in the passage says the primary benefit of offering the four-day week option to employees for the country as a whole would be to reduce unemployment rate, conversely, the lecturer disagrees stating that this option would not decrease unemployment rate, instead it will bring about staff working overtime, furthermore, it will increase the company expectation of its workers as they will expect the workers to carry out the five-day task they would normally do in four days, therefore no new staff will be employed.
In addition, the author believes that the four-day week will give the employees more free time, which could be used to improve the quality of their lives. On the contrary, the lecturer believes that it would rather have a negative effect on the quality of their lives by reducing job stability, career advancement as they could be passed over in times of promotion because employers will choose a staff who is always available to ensure continuous coverage and consistent supervision.
