TED effect
The main topic of both the reading and the lecture is about a turtle excluder device (TED) effects for using to help the turtle species that are caught in the nets. The article states that some people believe TED which has been attached to the net can be helpful in this problem and provides three challenges in this way. However, in the lecture the professor refutes the idea presented in the passage by giving examples and clarifying the weaknesses of it.
First, the passage posits that since turtles get trapped in the net rarely, it is not profitable to spend money on the TED. In contrast, the professor rejects this point by saying that in the USA in each year 1000 operation occures that turtle accidentaly has been caught. On the other hand, the population of these kinds of species are very small. Therefore, it is not logical to have this amount of catch each year.
Second, the reading claims that there are some other method which are more effective than TED and can be replaced. Nevertheless, the lecturer denies this, suggesting that it is good idea but just in the theory. In her mind, the method that is proposed in the text is not practical because in out of the sea, monitoring the time limitness can not be done.
Third, according to the article's opinion TED's are not effective for larger turtles, and as a result turtles can not escape from the nets. The speaker does not agree with this point of view. She asserts that the device is modifiable and can be changed to any size.
In conclusion, the points made in the lecture contradicted the central stand point of the passage. Turtle population in comparison to their total number, lack of monitoring out of sea, and ability to change TED for turtles with different size from the lecture demonstrate that the reading's opinion about limitness of TED is in doubt.
