Some students prefer to study at a large university that has several thousand students. Other students prefer studying at a small school that has only a few hundred students. Which type of these two types of schools do you prefer?
In my opinion, I prefer attending small schools that have only few hundreds of students to studying in large institutions with thousands of students for several reasons, which I will discuss in the following essay.
First and foremost, small schools allow for better communication between students and their teachers and students and their classmates as well. To illustrate more thoroughly, if a student asks a question during the class, the teacher will be able to fully answer the question without worrying too much about the time as the number of students is small. On the other hand, this will not be offered in a large class where the professor would be more busy and occupied to finish his lecture on time. In addition, since smaller class will have less noise and distraction than a large class, the student will be able to pick up the educator's explanations easily. Moreover, a class with a small number of people will get a better chance to know each other very well. For example, they will be able to organize trips together or even plan for a party or dinner. On the contrary, a big class will find it hard to come to a consensus on where to go and again they will have very different availabilities. As a result, it would be nothing short of impossible to meet in the middle for a large class.
Secondly, since most schools have a limited number of advanced laboratory equipments due to their high cost, students in small schools will get to spend more time with these cutting-edge technology tools and they can develop the required skills for the job market far better than their peers in large schools who will suffer as their exposure to research methods will be inadequate. To clarify, when I was enrolled in a school with thousands of students, I had hard time completing my assigned experiments in the laboratory since the school did not have sufficient machines to let each student do their assignments. Therefore, students had to stand in long lines to finish the steps for their procedure jumping from one set to the next quickly to avoid waiting in an endless line and staying overtime, after the practical session is over and everyone is gone, to finish their lab work. Furthermore, some experiments needed extremely expensive raw materials and hence it was not a good idea economically speaking to have each student complete it. Thus, these types of experiments were only done once as demonstration for a large group of students.
To conclude, I am off the view that small universities provide a better learning experience for students.
