As a country at the forefront of the technological revolution, China possesses many unique services integrated with advanced technologies. Typically, Chinese Investors have launched the hospitality industry using facial recognition and robotization technology throughout the facility. Grand hotel and pioneer in this field is the FlyZoo hotel under the project of the Alibaba Group.
The hotel is located in Hangzhou, China, which is the major economic and tourist hub of the country and also where Alibaba is headquartered. Opened on December 18, 2018, the 290-room hotel made a big splash among the domestic media. According to Radii China, rooms have seven different topics related to countries around the world. For example, the room with the theme "England" has many British flags, pictures with Big Ben clock tower.
The distinctive feature of the service is the hotel integrates artificial intelligence and robots to perform most procedures such as check-in, check-out, room service, and lighting control to save time and labour. Guests adjust electric lights, T.V.s, curtains in the room by voice commands for Alibaba's digital assistants named "Tmall Genie." Customer requests for room service as cleaning, new pillows will be handled by virtual assistants, the orders will be transmitted to service robots and delivered directly to customers. Customers can easily book and check out rooms with just a few touches on the mobile screen through application software. In particular, instead of using keys or key cards to access the hotel, FlyZoo applies facial recognition technology, evaluated high security and privacy for customers.
This project is a driving force for the development and signalizing the transform of the hospitality industry in the digital era we are living. The business model that Alibaba applied is a testament to the high applicability and incredible development speed of the software industry. According to Wang Qun, FlyZoo's CEO, the A.I. system helps to increase management efficiency, reducing more than half the workforce: "AI-based solutions can save customers time and staff. Hotels do not have to do repetitive jobs," Global Times reported. By the economic benefits that it brings, the application of software technology to the commercial sector will be the trend of the times. FlyZoo is the latest example of China's major technology corporations going into traditional ways like hotels and tourism. In July 2018, Baidu partnered with Intercontinental Hotel Group in Beijing to allow guests to use a virtual assistant as the hotel's standing staff during their stay at the hotel.
The FlyZoo hotel, owned by Alibaba China Group, is a landmark for the rapid development of Chinese trade, proving China's position in the international market. Using robots in hotel services has appeared in Japan a few years ago, but facial recognition is still a relatively new form. That makes FlyZoo significant.
