The reading discusses the increasing human population and agriculture accompanied by the decrease of the birds' population. The author listed three factors to support this idea. However, the lecturer asserts these reasons are not convincing and presents some evidence to refute all of them.
First, the author mentioned that by expanding human population, the birds' habitat will decrease and finally will disappear. On the contrary, the author dismissed this idea and declares that it provides a better and larger habitat for other birds like pigeons and also rodents. In another word, it causes some animals to increase and others to decrease.
In addition, the reading points out that agricultural activities will enhance following the growth of the human population. In contrast, the lecturer casts doubt on this issue by standing that the truth is different than something assumed in the reading. In fact, nowadays, fewer and fewer lands use for agriculture because the introduction of the plants with high productivity they no need to longer destroy the wilderness.
Last but not least, the reading passage proposes that pesticide endangered the life of birds and it is a reason for the birds' death or at least if it does not kill them will reduce their reproductivity success. On the other hand, in contradiction to the reading passage, the speaker claims that the ecologists are aware of the danger of pesticides. As a result, they tried to solve it with two methods. First of all, by producing new less toxic pesticides, secondly, by cultivating the plants that they are more pest-resistant crops.
