The following appeared in a memorandum sent by a vice-president of the Nadir Company to the company’s human resources department.
“Nadir does not need to adopt the costly ‘family-friendly’ programs that have been proposed, such as part-time work, work at home, and job-sharing. When these programs were made available at the Summit Company, the leader in its industry, only a small percentage of employees participated in them. Rather than adversely affecting our profitability by offering these programs, we should concentrate on offering extensive training that will enable employees to increase their productivity.”
Discuss how well reasoned
The argument states that the Nadir Company should not adopt Family friendly programs as these programs will adversely affect its profitability and instead, it should concentrate on offering the extensive training programs to increase the employee productivity. Stated in this way, the argument fails to take into account a few key factors which can call the conclusion into question. It rests on few assumptions for which there is no clear evidence. As a result, the argument is unconvincing and falls apart at the seams.
Firstly, the argument relies on the assumption that Nadir Company should not offer these programs because only a small percentage of people participated in these programs in the Summit Company, which is a leader in its respective industry. There is no information regarding the nature of work, work culture and career opportunities available in these companies. For example, if Summit Company is in manufacturing industry, it cannot offer a work from home option to its employees whereas Nadir Company develops android apps and iOS apps, which can be easily developed by employees at home.
Secondly, there is no evidence to claim that these family friendly programs will affect the profitability of the company. For example, if work from home option is made available to the employees, the company can cut down on travel allowances, which can actually help them in saving money. Moreover, work life balance is very important for employees these days and if the company provides such flexibilities, the employees may even stay with the company for longer time.
Thirdly, the argument further claims that it should offer extensive training programs to increase the employee productivity and but there is no supporting evidence regarding how many employees actually participate in these trainings and post attending these programs, the increase in employee productivity is enough to outweigh the cost of these trainings to the company.
Basis the information provided, we cannot draw the conclusion that the family friendly programs will adversely affect the profitability of the Nadir Company and by offering the extensive training programs it can significantly increase productivity of its employees.
