The reading and lecture are both about cause of strange sound which Russian marine patrolling had been hearing until the 1980's. The author of the reading suggested three possible explanation about the sound, which was challenged by the lecturer.
Firstly, in the reading, it is stated that the unfamiliar sound was caused by Orca whales, which lives near to the place where sound was detected and noise of the whales is similar to the thing heard. Nonetheless, the lecturer refutes this idea by mentioning that the whales are situated near to the surface of ocean while submarines were traveling in a deep location. Therefore, the sound made by the whales is not capable of reaching the submarines. Moreover, the whales would have detected by sonar if it had swum near to the ships.
Secondly, the author states that the technology is unable to detect the giant squid due to absence of the skeleton. The animal traveled near to the submarine because of their peculiarity and emitted sound. This specific argument was challenged by the lecturer. The extraordinary noise was being detected until 1980 and has not observed again while the squids are still existing in the area. Therefore, the sound would have been noticed if cause of the sound was the squid.
Finally, according to the reading, it was probably the submarine of the other nations and reason why it was not detected was advanced technology which the another submarines used. The lecturer, however, refutes this explanation by mentioning that detected sound was changing the direction briskly and any engine sound was notices. On the other hand, any submarines was produced with such advanced technology that it can change its direction rapidly and has no engine noise so far.
