The reading and the lecture are both about franchising a company, which is paying for well-known company to use their products and sell them with their brand name. The author of the reading feels that small business owners can buy a franchise, instead of starting a new business. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that franchising is controversial and it has several disadvantages.
To begin with, the author argues that buying a franchise dispels many problems. The article mentions that it is easy to choose the wrong product supplier and it can be expensive, however, by franchising business owner can find reliable supplier, and it lessens the risks of serious losses. This specific argument is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that contracts that used in franchising force business owner to buy goods and services from the big company. Additionally, he says that these process is very expensive.
Secondly, the writer suggests that by franchising someone can save a lot of money on advertising. In the article, it is said that advertising is a crucial factor in business's development, and a franchise owner gets the benefit of advanced advertising paid by the parent company. The lecturer, however, rebuts this by mentioning that franchise owner company should pay six percent of their revenues to the parent company due to advertisements. Moreover, he says that the parent company do not advertise your business. Conversely, they advertise their own products and brand's name. He says that individuals can profit more by advertising.
Finally, the author posits that it is safer to franchise. It is stated in the article that the failure rate for starting franchises is much lower and they can succeed by franchising easily. In contrast, the lecturer says that although, franchising is less risky, buying an independent business from former owner is more profitable. He notes that while buying an independent business, owner has twice chance to succeed than franchising.
