The chart below gives information about car ownership per household in the UK from 1975 to 2005.
The line graph shows data about car ownership per family in the UK from 1975 to 2005, broken down into 1 car, 2 cars, 3 cars, and no car.
Overall, car ownership rose during this period. In particular, the percentages of households owning more than 1 car increased while those with no car fell.
At the beginning of the period, families that had 1 car accounted for the largest percentage, 45%, with those without a car was the second-largest category, at about 43%. However, during the next ten years, both fell sharply to just 38% and 23% respectively. After this significant decline, while the percentage of families owning 1 car rose again gradually, finishing the period at nearly the same value as in the beginning, households without a car fell continuously to just about 22%.
The trends for the other two, families owning 2 cars and 3 cars, were mostly upwards. They started the period at just under 10%; however, at the end of it, they quadrupled to nearly 4 times larger than the proportions of the beginning, at around 20% and 10% respectively.
