We all work or will work in our jobs with many different kinds of people. In your opinion, what are some important characteristics of a co-worker (someone you work closely with)?
Human beings are social individuals and have an innate drive to communicate and build relationships with peers in all areas of life, including the workplace. While a few of us may opt to set up our own personal business, most of us will be working with co-workers. Two main ingredients are paramount in constructing successful professional relationships with these people.
First, the team member should possess the required technical background to ensure that tasks can be completed with efficacy. Most modern organizations are divided into separate distinct departments employing staff with specialized knowledge and a lack of properly trained people in one field may bring down other areas of the business. For instance, we may feel deep frustration if an IT personnel is unable to resolve our computer access issue. This will, in turn, affect our ability to complete our assignments in a timely and effective manner.
This technical know-how should, furthermore, be supplemented by soft people skills including communication and interpersonal skills. Hence, a colleague who understands our anger at a particular matter may act quicker to resolve it or a devise a temporary relief. People with high social skills render team work much more enjoyable and expands the effectiveness of the entire team beyond the mere addition of the individual output of each member. However, high emotional IQ is insufficient by itself and it is the right combination of both social and technical skills which contribute in increasing the appeal of a particular colleague in the organization.
Since team work is likely to remain a critical feature of most companies, it is pivotal that all new employees are equipped with the above-mentioned skills.
