The two maps illustrate the present status and planned development of central Islip, which is a small town. Overall, Islip town centre is going to be expanded by building new roads and adding more facilities and amenities.
According to the first map, this small town centre now has a main road going from the west to the east. Two arcades of shops are along the main road’s both sides, each including eight shops. To the south of the main road, there are housing behind the shops. A school is to the west and a park is to the east of the housing, both with roads connected to the main street. To the north is an open area of countryside.
Turning to the second map, the future plan, the main road is dramatically changed into a large circular dual carriageway. This circle contains most of the functional area except the school and part of housing. The original main street will be kept at the same location but restricted to pedestrians only. The shops in the north will be replaced by added facilities such as bus station, shopping centre, car park, and new housing. Locating in the south of circle road, there will be part of housing and the park, as well as new housing, which is in the middle.
