This set of the material in both reading and lecture is about bird population. The reading states that due to destructive influence of human activities, the number of birds have been declining. On the other hand the lecturer mentions that all the author's reasons are unconvincing.
First, the reading posits that needs of rapidly growing human populations for new settlements will contribute to destroying more and more birds' habitats. The lecturer opposes this point by saying that although constructing building for growing population negatively affects the populations of some certain types of birds, there is a wide variety of other species have been increasing such as pigeon and seagulls, which results in settlers' complaints.
Second, the passage describes by passing times, increasing the number of human population is undeniable, so this leads to increase in needs for more food production and consequently destruction of bird's habitat. However, the lecturer explains that in USA less and less lands have been used for agricultural purposes since scientists have introduced new crops which provide people with plenty of food resources.
Finally, the reading passage claims that using chemical pesticide to produce more food resources for human population will disturb food web. The speaker refutes this point by explaining that nowadays, people have applied less toxic pesticides for growing their crops. Moreover, they have been growing resistant plants to insect; therefore, they need no pesticide for more food.
