The table illustrates the percentage of residents owning eight household appliances in Britain between 1972 and 1973.
In 1972, 93% of British citizens possessed television, compared to 87% of those owning vacuum cleaner, the second most popular device. Ranked the following positions were the figures for refrigerator and washing machine, recorded at around 70%. All the four appliances had observed similar rising trends by 1983, reaching around 90% although vacuum cleaner was no longer available in any British houses in this year.
Meanwhile, telephone accounted for 42% in the total polulation in this country, more than 5% for the figure for central heating. Both figures had then increased by similar patterns, ending at around 70%. Dishwasher, which first appeard in households in Britain in 1978, had seen a slight growth, peaking at 5%, nearly one third of the figure for video, the newest appliance among the list in 1983.
Overall, most of the household devices saw upward trends; in addition, television remained by far the most popular consumer durables over the period surveyed.
