Recently, some controversy has been generated about whether or not Greek used a burning mirror to attack Roman which is a parblic shape mirror that used to start a fire. The reading states that Greek did not actually use this device for there possible reasons. However, the speaker argues that what the author mentioned is not convincing.
The first point of dispute is about if Greek people were advanced and knowledgable enough to make a burning mirror. The lecturer explains that ancient Greeks mathmatician could have collected and compined many small pices of copper and made a lage pice of mirror. In addition, the professor adds that they were able to make the right curved of geometic shape. By contrast, the writer is simply content to accept the idea that ancients Greeks could have made buring mirror.
Another controversial issue is about how long buinrng mirror would take to start a fire. According to the professor, ships during ancinet time were not only made of wook. There are other matriales were used to seal the wood parts together such as piches. Piches can catch fire inestingtely. Therefore, starting a fire with burning mirror would only take a few seconds even if the ship was moving. Interestingly, the auhtor does not even consider the other substance that used to construct the ships.
The final point of debate is the question of if buring mirror was a modified device of flaming arrows. The speaker says that Roman people could see the flaming arrows, so they would be perpare to put off the fire immedetly. However, Greek could have used buring mirror to start fire surprisingly, and eventually these fire would spead out throughout the ship. Despite that possible rationale, the author ignores these potential explanations.
