The widespread phenomenon of mass communication through cell phones and the internet has spurred enormous controversy. Many believe that people have become less able to build bonds with friends and family members. It is impossible to deny that social media is constantly changing the way that people interact with one another. With the advent of new technologies that allow for non-simultaneous and distant interaction, people all over the world are now able to build relationships in a way that was formerly not possible. Some might say that this is a negative trend, but this new development opens up for unique and effective connections.

People often feel estranged in their surroundings. There are so many hobbies and interests that people enjoy, that it can be difficult to find someone who shares the same passions. Social media is of huge benefit to these people as they are empowered with opportunity for connection to a widespread community and countless resources. Some may have always wanted to learn more about a topic without having an avenue to jump in. Social media has proved itself to be effective in educating people of all ages on a variety of subjects ranging from rollerblading to string theory.

Moreover, the internet is especially helpful for helping people find a voice. Whereas the first amendment protects our right to free speech, many people feel that they have lost their ability to be heard. Social media allows us all to find a new way to speak confidently and ensures that every person has the opportunity to be heard.

The reading and the lecture are both about the role of social media as a new way of communication between people. The author of the reading claims that social media has been an effective way of communication. It has opened up brand new opportunities for everyone. The lecturer challenges the claims made by the author. He is of the opinion that social media has affected many people’s lives by making them less socially connected in real life.
To begin with, the author argues that people can easily find like-minded persons in social media and help each other to grow. Social media acts as a bridge between them. The article mentions there can be countless resources found through social media. This specific argument is challenged by the author. He says social media includes a lot of risks. People could be easily targeted for attacks like fishing and end up losing their money. Additionally, he says the risk is not only limited to adults but also children’s can be manipulated to pursue wrongdoings.
Secondly, the author suggests social media can effectively build distant connections. In the article, it is stated that distant connections used to be an impossible thing to happen in the pre-social media times. However, the author rebuts this by mentioning that with an increase in the use of social media people have forgotten to interact socially with people around them. Many people nowadays lack social skills which are the crucial things to lead a successful life. To elaborate on this he brings up the point that a recent study by Arizona has shown there is poor social interaction between people.
Finally, the author posits that social media has created an opportunity to be heard. Moreover, in the article, it is said that the ability to be heard is very low unless with the help of social media. In contrast, the lecturer position is that people can form social clubs and create a chance to be heard. He notes that the advent of social media there are fewer social clubs than they used to be and people are not getting involved in what they do.
