According to the reading passage, three arguments were mentioned to show that Robert Peary reached the North Pole in 1909, while in the listening section, lecturer stated some competing theories to contradict passage's arguments.
In the reading passage, author pointed out three evidence, which support the truth of Peary's claim. First, the committee in the National Geographic Society concluded that Peary's accounts were consistent and persuasive, and declared that he indeed reached the North Pole. Second, Tom Avery recently made the trek, same to Peary's trek, in less than 37 days, which showed that Peary's claim was possible. Finally, photographs that Peary took himself support his claim to have reached the North Pole.
However, in the listening section, lecturer argued that evidence in the passage were not convincing, and he stated some controversial theories. First, committee was not objective, because committee's members were Peary's friends and they have taken money from Peary, so conclusions were based on biased ideas. Second, Avery journey was so different from Peary's journey, because Avery used airplane for his journey in some regions, so his journey took much less than Peary's trek. Besides, Peary's exploration was in unfavorable weather than Avery's journey. Finally, photographs taken by Peary, does not indicate anything, because photographs did not establish Sun's exact position, also photos faded overtime, so those photos does not approve that Peary reached North Pole.
