Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubts on specific points made in the reading passage.

According to the reading passage, author stated three hypotheses to explain the decline in populations of yellow cedar, specially in northwestern North America, while in the listening section, lecturer mentioned some other competing theories, which contradict to passage's information.
In the reading section, three ideas are mentioned to answer to this question that "why yellow cedar populations have been steadily declining in northwestern North America?", and author stated three explanations. First, yellow cedar decline may be caused by insect parasites such as cedar dark beetle, because this beetle attack cedar trees. Second, brown bears sometimes claw at the cedars in order to eat the tree bark, which can be destructive. Finally, gradual changes of climate is responsible for the yellow cedar's decline, because changing climate is likely to suffer damage from partial freezing on cold winters.
However, in the listening section, speaker pointed out that passage's information was not adequate, so he argued other controversial theories. First, healthy yellow cedar is more resistant to beetle, because those trees are saturated to powerful chemicals, which kills harmful insects. Second, brown bears are not cause for the cedar populations decline, because cedar exists in both mainlands and islands, and in both regions cedar's populations are decreasing, while there are no bears in islands. Finally, more trees die in lower elevations rather than in higher elevations, which contradicts to the passage's arguments, and this reason is not whats killing them.
