The chart illustrates the comparison of different transportation methods used by students between the ages of 5 to 12 years for commuting to and from school in 1990 and 2010. The five transportation means are car, walking, cycling, a combination of walking and bus and bus.
Overall, there has been a shift in the way students commute to and from school, as the methods which were used most frequently in 1990, that is, walking, bus, cycling and the mix of walking and bus have decreased over the two decades, whilst car, the least popular mode in 1990, has significantly risen in 2010.

On the other hand, car travel has seen a sharp increase as only around 4 million trips were made in 1990, whereas, in 2010, this has increased threefold as approximately 12 million trips were made by car.
Commuting by cycle, bus and a combination of walking and bus have lost favour over the 20 years. The use of cycle has fallen by more than three times to only 2 million trips in 2010, however, over 6 million trips were made in 1990. Furthermore, there is a similar decrease in students using a mix of walking and bus by almost half to about 3 million in 2010. The decline in the bus is less dramatic by almost 2 million to approximately 5 million trips in 2010.
