free trade
TOEFL WRITING
The author in the reading and the professor in the lecture talk about the viability of free trade. Whilst, the author, agrees that free trade has innumerous advantages, the professor in the lecture contradicts his opinions and says that it has more disadvantages and fallacies.
Firstly, the author say that free trade enables international division of labour which makes each country specialise in an individual good/product. Furthermore, this results in better production and effective utilisation of goods which boosts the employment opportunities.
The author refutes all these opinions. He states that free trade does enable international division but does not result in specialisation of products and goods. The under developed countries face the brunt of this and are unable to keep up with the production due to limited resources. Therefore, the unemployment issue rises.
Secondly, the author asserts that free trade has increased the global output of products due to its cheaper prices. With large scale production, consumers tend to buy more, which has helped to increase the standard of living and make people more prosperous. The professor offsets all these points made by the author and present a conflicting theory. He claims that many people in these manufacturing industries do not hire local people. Instead, they hire people from cheaper labour nations and make the whole production offshore. This results in more product but not locally and thereby, does not support or create employment opportunity. Furthermore, it upgrades the standard of living of the richer people only.
Lastly, the author mentions that free trade has made the markets expand globally since the demands have increased. To satisfy these demands more labour is required to ensure timely delivery and therefore creating more job opportunities. The author neglects the arguments and posits that free trade has resulted into production of cheaper products. On top of this, cheaper price has made the whole situation worse. This has resulted into a highly unfavourable situation for the employees and resulted into decrease of job opportunities.
