The following was used as part of an internet advertising company's appeal to businesses: Furniture Depot employed our internet advertising company to help. Since then its sales increased by 10% over last year's totals. Furniture Depot's success demonstrates how using our internet services can increase your profitability.
Describe how well reasoned you find this argument. In the discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the argument's conclusion. You may also address possible changes in the argument that would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
The argument rests on questionable assumptions, vaguely-defined terms, numerous logical flaws that makes it impossible to validate the conclusion that how other companies will benefit using mentioned internet advertising company.
The argument starts by giving example of Furniture Depot which has increased its sales by 10% over the last year. Then it goes on to assume that only factor that has caused this the internet advertising company's help. But the argument fails to mention that internet advertising company is the only reason. The increase could have easily been the result of something else like increased demand for furniture in that year due to more people are migrated to the city where Furniture Depot has its business.
Although it assumes the only reason for the success of the company is internet advertising company, it also fails to state whether the profits have increased in the last year. May be Furniture Depot's profitability has increased, but what is the guarantee that the internet advertising work for other companies. Only one company can not be the representative of all the companies. Even if other companies need internet advertising, the internet advertising company doesn't specify if it studies the customer-businesses before it starts advertising the company.
The internet advertising company fails to mention its methods of advertising as the idea of advertising for one business may not be applicable for other business. For example, advertisement of educational material on the sites related to entertainment may not be good idea.
The internet advertising company's contention that it can increase the profitability of any business is sadly misguided which is based on unjustified assumptions, scarcity of examples and logical flaws.
