The charts below give information about travel to and from the UK, and about the most popular countries for UK residents to visit. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The line graph shows how many UK citizens travelled abroad and how many tourists visited the UK in the period between 1979 and 1999. Also, the bar chart presents the top five countries among British residents in 1999.
Overall, the number of international tourists who visited the UK was less than that of British who went outside of the country. Moreover, France turned out to be the most preferable holiday destination for UK residents.
According to the first graph, ten million of people decided to spend their vacation in the United Kingdom in 1979, while about 14 million of UK tourists went abroad. After 1984 both figures started increasing, however, the number of British travelers considerably exceeded the influx of foreign visitors to the UK. Thus, by the end of the observed period, in 1999 the quantity of visits out of the UK comprised approximately 54 million and to the UK– roughly 27 million.
Looking closely at the second chart, it is shown that France was the leading tourist country in 1999 with more than 11 million of visitors. The number of people travelled to Spain accounted for approximately 9 million, making it the second most popular country. Finally, Turkey, Greece, USA received much less tourists that year, about 2, 3 and 4 millions, respectively.
