The article introduces the topic of what happened to the population of Rapa Nui Island. The writer discusses three possible theories of what could have happened. The lecturer disagrees. He believes that there is not enough evidence supporting those theories and gives detailed examples of why he disagrees with the author's claim.
In the reading passage, the author begins by stating that the islanders had an obsession with statues. The people of Rapa Nui used to cut trees to have more space to transport them. Eventually, this caused deforestation and starvation because of the infertile soil. The lecturer, however, disagrees. In recent research, it has been found that the Rapa Nui people were skilled farmers because agricultural tools had been found on the site that in the past were mistaken as weapons. So, it is highly unlikely that they would have not noticed the deforestation before all the trees were cut down.
Also, the author claims that rats were abundant on the island; they ate the tree seeds, and later that caused deforestation. The speaker believes this theory is wrong. He agrees that there were a lot of rats, but they only would have disturbed the peace of the place, nothing further. He also notes that there might have been a lot of rats because they did not have any enemies to fight, and ,due to that, the population would have only increased.
Another theory the author mentions is when Europeans arrived and captured the natives for slavery, diseases like syphilis and smallpox infected them and later caused deaths when the Rapa Nui people came home. The lecturer attacks these claims by saying that Europeans took people from the island, but they did not return, since they were slaves, and by that the diseases never got to the island.
To sum up, both the writer and the professor hold conflicting views on what happened to the Rapa Nui people.
