signs of volaco eruption
Both the reading and the lecture discuss the Yellowstone Caldera volcano. The reading states that there is a possibility of this volcano eruption now and provides three theories to prove the signs. The professor, on the other hand, explains that these signs do not show that volcano is going to explode soon and gainsays each of the theories mentioned in the article.
First and foremost, the article begins by asserting that a scientist has discovered an enormous magma reservoir beneath the volcano, due to which the supervolcano has been collecting magma for a long time. Thus, it will result in a big explosion. However, the professor describes that to observe this kind of huge reservoir advanced types of equipment are required that are not available yet. Moreover, a huge magma chamber does not mean that volcano is going to erupt soon. In fact, the majority of the magma is present in rock form. Therefore, this is a sign that there will be no eruption in the upcoming time.
Next, the professor further points into details that plateaus are formed in such a way that when they breathe, it results in the rising and fall of the surface. The rapid rise of the surface of the Yellow stone is due to breathing and in fact, it has fallen now. These claims refute the writer's implication about explosion due to the rise of the surface of the volcano. Thus, this sign does not indicate the eruption of the volcano.
Ultimately, the article wraps its argument by declaring the third theory of increasing seismic activity. According to this theory, there have been swarms of earthquakes happening around the area. So, eventually, it will trigger the eruption. In contrast, the speaker rebuts this point by showing the inaccuracy of the author that eruptions and earthquakes are not related. Since earthquakes release some of the pressure from underground heat, it reduces the chances of explosion. Therefore, it has been noted that even very close earthquakes did not affect the volcano.
