The table compares the proportion of the two Australian households that earn different amount of income per year with access to computers and internet in the years, 1998, 1999, and 2000.
It is noticeable that the percentages of using both computers and internet by the two households saw the increase over the majority of the period. The percentage of using the internet by the household with yearly income above $50,000 saw the biggest rise while that of accessing to computers by the average family with income below $50,000 increased slightly.
In 1998, the figure for family with salary above $50,000 that used computers was 34 percent, which was almost twice less than the other class of family (69%), experienced the little increase by 1 percent in 1999 and to 37 percent in 2000. By contrast, the percentage of the other household (above $50,000 per year) with access to computer went up dramatically from 69 percent to 77 percent over the three years.
The proportion of the lower income family with access to internet soared by around the double from 10 percent in 1998 to 21 percent in 2000, as well as that of the higher income family that used the internet boomed by 23 percent over the whole years.
