How building were used for chaco Canyon people in New Mexico.
The passage and the lecture discuss how settlement buildings could have been used in the Grand Canyon in New Mexico. The reading holds that archaeologists come up with three potential theories about how stone buildings known as “great houses” were used in the early twelfth century.
Since the buildings have more than a hundred rooms and have similarities to the modern building, the passage believed that they were used as residential apartments. The lecturer claimed that this theory is unconvincing. Residential buildings must have fireplaces in each room to operate properly, but these buildings only had a few fireplaces to accommodate at least 10 families, not hundreds as the reading claims.
The second theory that the passage suggested is that the Chaco building may have been used as store food supplies because maize was one of the main crops harvested by the Chaco people. Maize could be stored for long periods, and the great houses looked suitable for such a purpose. According to the lecture, there is enough evidence to prove that the great houses were not used to store maize because after the excavation researchers got to the conclusion. If the great houses had been used to store maize, there would have been huge maize containers and probably maize spilled on the floor.
A third theory, the great houses might have been used for ceremonial purposes as the passages claimed. There were found a surprising number of broken pots and this evidence was taken as people might have gathered for special ceremonies. The lecture refutes this theory. There is not enough evidence to hold this claim. Besides the broken pots, there are more broken materials that might have been left in a construction process for example stone, construction material, sand, and regular trash. Moreover, the broken pots might have been the containers that were used for workers to eat.
