The graph below gives information from a 2008 report about consumption of energy in the USA since 1980 with projections until 2030. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The graph illustrates data about energy consumption from 1980 to the present day, and with further projections up until 2030.
Overall, all six categories saw some overall increases over time, and petrol has always been the most dominant type of energy, with its use expected to increase further in the future.
Over the period in question, petrol and oil usage was the highest. In 1980, 35 quadrillion units were used, after which there were some slight fluctuations until 1995. This was followed by a steady increase and the figure is expected to reach a peak of 50 quadrillion units in 2030. This rate of increase is matched by that of coal, whose usage rose by approximately 15 quadrillion units over the same period of time. Natural gas consumption started at 20 quadrillion units in 1980 as the second-most used category, at which point it started to fluctuate slightly and finally levelled off at 25 in 2015. This figure is projected to remain stable until 2030.
On the other hand, nuclear fuel and solar/wind fuel usage is not expected to change dramatically over the period in question. The figure for both categories in 1980 was 3 quadrillion units, and those two fuels will only experienced some slight increases in usage until 2030. The opposite was true for hydropower, as it also started at 3 quadrillion, but then dropped to 2.5 and will remain at that figure till the end of the period.
