Consumption of spreads

Essay topics:

Consumption of spreads

The line graph shows the amount of three different types of spread ( margarine, low fat and reduced spreads, and butter) which were consumed in a period between 1981 and 2007. The figures are measured in grams.
Overall, it is clear that the consumption of margarine and butter were higher than that of low fat and reduced spreads at the start of the period. Following that, the consumption of margarine and butter experienced a downward trend. Although the amount of low fat and reduced spreads started later in 1996, it was the most widely used spread in the final years
Starting in 1981, the amount of butter and margarine were slightly over 140 grams and around 90 grams respectively. The butter consumption climbed gradually until it peaked at 160 grams in 1986 before plunging dramatically to about 50 grams in the last years. Regarding the margarine figures, after a small downswing in 1986 to exactly 80 grams, it made a steady recovery and remained stable from 1991 to 1996. After that, it declined significantly to 40 grams so that it became the least popular spread.
On the other hand, low fat and reduced spreads usage were only introduced in 1996 at around 10 grams and had a surge until it dominated both butter and margarine by 2001. It had a slight fall to finish at 70 grams in the final year.
