The first chart below shows how energy is used in an average Australian household. The second chart shows the percentage of greenhouse gas emissions which result from this energy use.
The pie charts compare the percentages of household energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions coming from such energy use in Australia.
It is noticeable that not only does heating (including water heating) consume most household energy but also pollutes most while cooling accounts for the least proportions in terms of both energy usage and greenhouse gas.
Looking at the most energy-consuming sources, up to 72% of energy goes to heating and water heating, which consequently release nearly half of the total greenhouse gas amount. However, the remarkable difference could be seen in the heating activities accounting for over 40% of the total energy consumed but surprisingly 15% in gas emissions while water heating’s figures remained relatively similar in both categories (about 30%). In contrast, cooling only uses up of 2% of energy and emits 3% of the greenhouse fumes.
Dramatic differences are also seen in the energy use and emission gap when we compare the percentages of lighting, refrigeration and other appliances. These comprise 8%,14% and 28% respectively in energy usage but all take up twice as much in gas release.
