The bar chart illustrates the proportion of 3 different age groups of American elders who were above 65 years old in a century
Overall, the population in the US was getting older throughout the period, when there were increases in the population of elderly people until the final year. While people from 65 to 74 dominated the population age 65 and over as the crowdest, the percentage of people who were over 85 was much lower.
In 1990, elders aged 65 to 74 accounted for only 2.9% of the population, followed by the equivalent figures for people between 75-84 and over 85 with merely 1% and 0.2% respectively. Subsequently, all age groups’ proportions grew steadily until 1940, when the figures for population aged 65-74 and 75-84 increased significantly to 4.8% and 1.7% respectively. In contrast, there were no significant changes in the figure for people who were older than 85
From 1940 upwards, the portion of elders began to rise considerably and reached its peak at 12.6% in 1990 including 7.3%, 4.0% and 1.2% of people between 65-74, 75-84 and over 85 years old respectively. After that, the percentage of elderly people was witnessed with a 0.2% decrease, however, although all age groups were reported with remarkable declines of 4% to 8%, the figure for those who were above 85 marginally climbed from 1.2% to 1.5%
