Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading passage.
The reading passage talks about the benefits of autonomous cars. The lecturer does not agree with these benefits for various reasons which I will explore in the following paragraphs.
First, the passage suggests that driverless cars cause less accidents than cars driven by a human driver. The professor does not agree with it and says that the automated cars are programmed by humans. So, it is bound to have some errors. To corroborate his statement, the professor gave the example of an accident of a self-driving car which has driven over 700,000 miles.
Furthermore, the reading passage cites that self-driven cars cause less environmental pollution because of their ability to communicate with other cars and reduce traffic. So, the cars will stop and start the engine less often. Thus, reducing pollution. Again, the professor finds this benefit flawed and says that automated cars will in fact, cause more pollution as people will not need to have a license to drive a car, this way everyone including the young and the old might get cars. Thus, increasing the number of cars on the road and leading to more traffic and pollution.
Lastly, the passage mentions that self-driven might give time to the passengers to do other work or watch videos. The professor finds this statement flawed and says that some people find driving relaxing. It might give them a time off from their route work life and because of the autonomous cars, they will again do their route work which they do all day or probably waste time and watch videos.
Thus, the lecturer disagrees with the advantages of automated cars mentioned in the reading passage.
