Recently in the United States, there is a controversial debate about whether there should be a policy for employees to work only in four days of the week instead of five. Apparently, both ideas have advantages and disadvantages and the passage support the idea by stating three reasons and the professor suggests that it's not like as the passage states and opposes each point made by the passage.
First, the passage claims that working in a four-day work week will increase company profits because employees would feel more rested and alert, and therefore they would make fewer errors in their work. However, the professor refutes this by mentioning that it would cost more money for the companies as they should provide employees with sufficient training and medical finance supports and also more space and computers should be provided for more employees. Furthermore, financial support for medical issues is the same for both types of employees and therefore, as the number of employees rises, the cost will go up, too.
Second, the passage posits that having the four-day option will reduce unemployment rates in the country. However, the professor refuses this idea and surmises that this will affect current employees in a way that they have to work overtime to elevate in their work and get promotions. Moreover, they will raise employer's expectations and many of them may think that four-day employees are the same as five-day employees and eventually, this will render employees unpleasant.
And as the final point, the article states that working less hour in a week will improve individual employees in a way that they will have more time spending with their family, or pursuing their private interests. The professor rejects this point by saying that this will decrease the stability of employee's jobs and it will have a negative effect on their career. Furthermore, employers will reluctant to promote four-day employees and they prefer five-day employees in the management parts of the company because of the nature of their job.
To sum up, the passage and the professor have controversial notion about the number of days employees should work in a week.
