Overall, the proportion of the elder population in these three countries was never more than 30 percent. Specifically, the figure for Sweden and the USA increased steadily throughout the period. Meanwhile, the figure of Japan was always lower with a dramatic decrease but it is predicted to experience a great jump in the future.
In 1940, in Sweden and America, there was over 6% and 9% of the population was 65 or over. Then, the figures both rose to merely 14% and 15% respectively after 1980. About 35-40 years later, the elder population rate of Sweden continued surging to about 20% while it was down to 14% in the USA. In 2040, the figures are estimated to keep increasing to over 25% and 23% respectively.
By contrast, in Japan, there was 5% of the population was 65 or more in 1940. More than 40 years later, the figure dropped to only about 3%. Around 30 following years, the rate grew up to nearly 7%. Finally, it is forecasted to keep soaring and overtake the figure of Sweden and the USA with over 27% in 2040.
