The tables show the sales of fair-priced coffee from developing countries and bananas in Switzerland, UK, Belgium, Sweden and Denmark in the years 1999 and 2004.
Overall, the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas have shown a dramatic increase in all five European countries over the period. Meanwhile the sale of bananas has suffered a slight decrease in Sweden and Denmark.
It is observed that the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee has sky-rocketed in the UK, from 1.5 millions of euros in 1999 to a surprising 20 millions of euros in 2004. Similarly, the sales has nearly doubled in Belgium and Sweden where they were 1 and 0.8 millions of euros respectively in 1999. A similar trend was observed in Switzerland and Denmark where the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee showed a significant increase from 3 and 1.8 millions of euros to 6 and 2 millions of euros over the period.
In addition to this, in Switzerland, the sale of bananas has leaped from 15 million euros in 1999 to 47 million euros in 2004. Likewise, greater increase in sales of bananas was seen in UK and Belgium where it rose from a mere 1 and 0.6 to 5.5 and 4 millions of euros respectively. On the contrary, Sweden and Denmark have suffered the greatest decline in sales of bananas from 1.8 and 2 to a mere 1 and 0.9 millions of dollars respectively.
