The reading passage and the lecture are talking about people who buy franchise from other companies to begin there own business. The author claims several advantages from buying franchise. However, the professor casts doubt on claim made in article. She has different opinions about franchising.
In the beginning, the author states, franchise provide owners with specific reliable suppliers who provide them with goods and services, so this will protect franchise owners from the risk of serious losses. This statement is challenged by professor. She mentions, owner will be enforced to buy from those suppliers that franchising company deal with. However, there are many other places which might offer fair prices lower than suppliers cost.
In addition, the writer asserts, franchising owner can benefit from saving a lot of money by omits advertisement since franchising companies are already known. The lecturer in the other hand refutes this notion. She elaborates on the contract between franchise owners and company to give them 6% from their sales for advertising services. Moreover, franchising companies will not spend these money for owners products, but, for advertising their businesses.
Finally, the author contends, franchise provide more security than independent business. It will increase the rate of success in first year. The professor contradicts this idea. She points out, franchise owner will affect by all franchising companies. Owners might losses their money in first year. Furthermore, there is a third option which is not mentioned. People can buy business directly from other independent owners and be assure this business will gain money more than buying from franchising companies.
The author talks about the advantages of franchise over starting a new business. However, the lecturer discusses the weaknesses of the author points, and continues by showing a third option that could has a high chance of success.
First, the author states that franchise is a good choice to overcome the problem of finding a supplier which could lead to an extra cost. In contrast, the lecturer clears that in franchise the company forces the customer to buy specific services that are overpriced, and eventually he will be paying more many on things cost less.
Second, the author talks about the benifit of franchise in saving money that is spend on advertising. According to the lecturer, the franchise owner is not advertising the customer product, but his brand and his own business, so if the customer pay for example, half of this amount of money, he will get much more benifit.
Finally, the author explains that a franchise offers more security than opening a new business. In other hand, the lecturer says that even though the franchise is more secure, but it is not the least risky choice. In response the lecturer suggests buying an already existing business as an alternative choice whice has almost twice chance of success.
